The 35th Annual Nassau County Empire State Games for the Physically Challenged, “Victory Challenge” will be held May 30th thru June 1st at the Mitchell Athletic Complex. This event is the longest running program of its kind and since 2011 has been kept alive by the help of private and community support when funding was cut from the County’s budget. Although, Nassau County Executive Laura Curran, the departments of Parks and Recreation, Health and Human Services, as well as many private/public partnerships and dedicated volunteers are committed to a successful future.
More than 1,100 physically challenged young people come together from across New York to compete in a weekend-long sporting event. Athletes compete in Track and Field, slalom, archery, swimming, wheelchair basketball and table tennis. These events offer physically challenged children who are between the ages of five and 21 years old opportunities to participate in sports and recreational activities which are adapted to best suit their unique abilities.
The athletes whose physical challenges include amputees, cerebral palsy, spinal cord injured, visually impaired and deaf/hearing impaired; will compete for Gold-Silver-Bronze medals and ribbons.
The Theresa Foundation is proud to sponsor the Nassau County Victory Challenge as the Wheelchair Basketball Event sponsor of $5000. The Foundation honors the memory of Theresa Alessandra Russo by touching the lives of children with special needs and their families. The Foundation fosters each child’s unique abilities by supporting programs focusing on art, music, dance and recreation. We hope that the Victory Challenge will create greater awareness of the ability of physically challenged individuals and remove the stigma that existed when our daughter, Theresa was born in the 1980s. We would like to wish all of the athletes’ the best of luck in their competitions.
The Theresa Foundation is very personal for the Russo family, their daughter Theresa was also born in 1985 – severely challenged with significant physical limitations. What made her happy was motion, being outside and being involved with her siblings and friends.
So, as the Athletes embark in these games – we wish for you is the following:
May you revel in the competition
May you excel to new heights
May you enjoy this moment
For you are a champion by participating in the Victory Challenge
Our very best to all of you!
